THE CERTIFICATE FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

The Certification for Sustainable Tourism Program–– known locally as CST –– is a by–product of the Costa Rican Tourism Board to promote environmental sustainability throughout Costa Rica, to preserve and protect what has attracted visitors here in the first place. The CST was designed to differentiate businesses of the tourism sector, based on the degree to which they comply with a sustainable model of natural, cultural and social resource management.

CST is regulated by the Costa Rican National Accreditation Commission and consists of a scale of 5 “levels” of sustainable tourism achievement. Sustainability as a model for development addresses the need to satisfy the current requirements of society without compromising the rights of future generations. If we are careful in protecting them, the natural resources available today are the same that future generations of this country will have to meet their own needs. In tourism, sustainability means a balanced interaction of three basic factors of the tourism industry:

  • The appropriate use of our natural and cultural resources;
  • Improving the quality of life of local communities;
  • Economic success, which provides jobs and drives overall economic prosperity.

At the Flamingo Beach Resort & Spa, we have developed and implemented a series of valuable environmental best practices in the areas of Water Use & Quality, Energy Use, Waste Management, Purchasing Policies, Air Quality, and Protection of Flora & Fauna. (Hot links to copy on Environmental Practices Sub–Tab) Our training and implementation of these elements is what drives our scores to determine our level of Certificate for Sustainable Tourism. Due to our continued efforts at promoting sustainable tourism we proudly have achieved a level of 4 "leaves" – one of the best of all Guanacaste hotels!
